The historic Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the only mining site in the world functioning continuously since the Middle Ages. At the depth of about 327 metres its original excavations such as shafts, lakes, chambers, longitudinals and traverses stretch for the total of about 300 kilometres. Lying on nine levels, they illustrate all the stages of mining technology development over time. By the decision of UNESCO the Wieliczka Salt Mine was added to the World List of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
